Our Build Process
Carefully Selected Materials
Exceptional furniture begins with quality materials. At Smith Custom Woodworks, we carefully select hardwoods such as walnut, white oak, cherry, maple and red oak for their strength, character and natural beauty. When a project calls for additional stability, we may use premium furniture-grade plywood in appropriate interior or structural applications. Every material is chosen to complement the design and intended use of the piece.
Purposeful, Lasting Construction
Each project is built in our Baltimore workshop using joinery and construction methods selected for strength, durability and appearance. Depending on the design, these methods may include mortise-and-tenon joinery, dovetails, dados, rabbets, miters and other proven techniques. Quality hardware such as soft-close drawer slides and hinges, is used whenever specified.

Built With Patience
Custom furniture should never feel rushed. We allow the necessary time for careful milling, fitting, assembly and finishing. This measured approach helps us create furniture and cabinetry that looks refined, functions properly and stands up to everyday use.

Detailed Surface Preparation
A beautiful finish begins long before the finish itself is applied. Every visible surface receives careful, multi-stage sanding to smooth the wood, refine the details and prepare it for an even, consistent finish.

Hand-Applied Finishes
Our stains, oils and protective finishes are applied with close attention to the character of the wood. Each finish is selected according to the project’s appearance and performance needs, enhancing the grain while helping protect the surface from ordinary use.

Thorough Final Inspection
Before a completed piece leaves our workshop, we inspect the woodwork, joinery, finish and hardware. Doors and drawers are checked for proper alignment and smooth operation, and any detail that does not meet our standards is corrected before delivery or shipment.

Distinctly Yours
The result is a thoughtfully crafted piece made especially for your home or business. Because real wood has natural variations in grain, color and texture, no two pieces are exactly alike. Your furniture will carry its own character, and is designed to be enjoyed for many years to come.
